Every Member of Dumbledore’s Army in Harry Potter

Since the Ministry of Magic did not want Hogwarts students to have practical experience using defensive Defense Against the Dark Art skills, for fear that Albus Dumbledore was going to use Hogwarts students as an army to overthrow Cornelius Fudge as the Minister of Magic, Dolores Umbridge was appointed as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor. Professor Umbridge did not allow students to practice the spells but to study them in theory only. As such, Hermione Granger proposed that students learn practical Defense Against Dark Arts on their own. This secret school club was named Dumbledore’s Army (more commonly referred to as the DA) because it was what the Ministry of Magic feared.

Even though the DA was created as a means to rebel against the Ministry and Umbridge in particular, the members play a much larger role then that of an after school club. Members of the DA were vital in not only the showdown at the Ministry of Magic in the Order of the Phoenix but also in the Half Blood Prince and the final battle of Deathly Hallows, using the old coins enchanted by Hermione to alert all members of the upcoming fight. During Severus Snape’s rule as Headmaster of Hogwarts, the remaining members of the DA rallied against the new regime and were instrumental in fighting back against the Death Eaters and keeping hope for a victorious ending alive.

Below is a table listing all known members of Dumbledore’s Army (DA), organized by their Hogwarts House:
