Alan Rickman, who is both loved and hated by Harry Potter fans for playing Severus Snape so well in the Harry Potter films, is among those due to be listed in the annual Queen’s New Years Honours, according to the Daily Mail. The paper said:
Alan Rickman is one of the few from the entertainment industry tipped to get an award. The 62-year-old actor, who plays Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films, has been one of Britain’s most respected stage and screen actors for the last two decades.
The UK Honours System recognises merit and service to Great Britain. There are several different types of award, including MBE, OBE and CBE, each one recognising a different type of contribution. Honours lists are published twice a year at New Year and in mid-June on the date of The Queen’s official birthday. Anyone can receive an award if they reach the required standard of merit or service, and honours lists contain a wide variety of people from different backgrounds. Anyone can nominate someone for an award.
Harry Potter actors Julie Walters and Richard Griffiths were honored by the Queen last year. Other past honorees include Robbie Coltrane, Sir Michael Gambon, Robert Hardy, Dame Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton and Emma Thompson.
