HBO is inching closer to the start of production on their new Harry Potter TV series. We’ve now arrived at an important milestone: the casting of the story’s three central characters, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and the eponymous Harry Potter himself.
The casting call was announced today on the official Instagram for the series:
The search for the next Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger is underway! An open casting call for residents of the UK and Ireland has been announced for the new HBO original series Harry Potter. Visit https://app.castittalent.com/HPCasting for more.
The first stage of the talent search is an open casting call across the UK. Children who wish to audition must be between the ages of 9 and 11 as of April 2025. They must also be a resident of the United Kingdom or Ireland. Their applications must be submitted by their parent or legal guardianthrough Cast It Talent before October 31st, 2024.
The application requires two videos. The first one must be a poem, short story, or monologue with a 30 second maximum length. The second video requires the child to give their date of birth, height, where they live, and a description of a close family member, friend, or pet with a one minute maximum length. Both videos should be performed in the child’s own accent. Further filming instructions state that the videos can be filmed on any device, including a smart phone, and the child can wear whatever is comfortable. The videos should be filmed in landscape orientation with the child looking close into the camera in a quiet, well-lit room with a neutral background.
Big Shoes to Fill
When the original trio were cast for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the young stars were launched into instant global fame. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have all carried on successful acting careers, but may always be best known for their roles in the Harry Potter films.
HBO will most likely want to put their own spin on the series and shake things up a bit with the casting while still remaining true to the characters from the books. Whoever they choose, there will be three young actors whose lives will soon be changed in a big, big way.

I love deeply human stories in fantastical wrappings. Dragons, vampires, androids... it's all good - as long as the characters feel real and the story makes me think.
